AN HONEST COMPARISON

One file vs WordPress

WordPress runs over 40% of all websites, and it earned that. The question is whether your small business site is the kind it serves well.

What WordPress is brilliant at

WordPress is a publishing machine. WordPress is a sound choice if you write articles every week, or want to edit every page yourself from a dashboard. It is also the right choice for a shop with baskets, stock and checkout through WooCommerce. It has a huge pool of themes, plugins and people who can work on it. None of this page argues otherwise, and if that describes your business, use it.

What it costs a small service site

Most small business sites are not publications. They are a shop window: who you are, what you do, proof, prices, contact. Build that window with a theme, a page builder and a stack of plugins, and you carry machinery you never use.

The weight is real. The median mobile web page is about 2.1 MB. This page is under 10 KB, doing the same job.

The second cost is upkeep. WordPress core, the theme and every plugin need updating, and unpatched plugins are how small business sites most often get broken into. That is either your job, or a monthly maintenance fee on top of hosting. A single file has no plugins to patch and no admin panel to break into.

Measured on this site; page-weight medians from the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025. Some rows are judgements, and say so.

Which should you pick?

Pick WordPress if you publish constantly, want to edit everything yourself, or need a full store. That machinery is the point, and it is worth its weight.

Pick one fast file if your site is a shop window that needs to open instantly, rank locally and never need patching. Payment links and booking tools can still be added without dragging it down.

And if your needs outgrow a single file, I will say so. That promise is on the main page too.

Fair questions

Is WordPress bad?

No. This page is about fit, not fault. For a shop-window site, most of its machinery sits idle while you carry its weight and upkeep.

Can I edit a single-file site myself?

You send me the change and updates are included in the monthly price. If you want to rewrite pages weekly yourself, that is a real reason to choose WordPress, and I will say so.

What if I need a shop or bookings?

Payment links and booking tools fit without slowing the site. A full store with stock and baskets is WooCommerce territory.

I already have a WordPress site. Is it slow?

Send the address to hi@zip.ms and I will reply with its real numbers and what they would become. Or run it yourself at pagespeed.web.dev.
